Plastic materials, like polycarbonate, need a protective scratch resistant coating when used for windows that typically would use glass but cannot due to weight and breakage concerns. In demanding, high traffic environments, unprotected polycarbonate can scratch at the touch of a finger, making them a poor fit for use in many display applications.
